Elwood Overton Plummer is a native of San Antonio, Texas. He attended Phillis Wheatley High School and lettered in basketball each year. While in high school, he was the top scorer and was an all-district pick. Coach Plummer was a two-time all-conference player at San Antonio College from 1962-1964. While at Jackson State, Coach Plummer was an outstanding shooting guard. He helped lead Jackson State to a pair of NCAA II Tournament appearances from 1964-1966.
Coach Plummer earned a BS degree from Jackson State University in 1966 and a master's degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1969. Plummer has 38 years of experience in the field of education as a teacher, coach, and administrator.
Plummer began his coaching career as a volunteer coach at Phillis Wheatley High School, serving as an assistant to his high school coach, Mr. Edward Price. In his first coaching season alongside Coaches Edward Price and Windsor Tanner, Wheatley compiled a record of 30 wins and 2 losses. After only one year at Wheatley High School, Plummer was named the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at St. Phillip’s Junior College in San Antonio, Texas. After three years there, Plummer went on to coach at Jackson State University, Wiley College, Huston-Tillotson College, and Prairie View A&M University. His basketball career has come full circle as he returns to coach again at Huston-Tillotson University.
Coach Plummer made history when he coached Prairie View A&M University to its first Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Title and its first NCAA Division I berth in 1998.
Coach Plummer retired from Prairie View in 2005. In 2005, he was hired by Dr. E. Thurman Walker, Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas, to open and manage the Antioch Sports Complex.
Plummer has stayed engaged in basketball after retirement at the local level through his affiliation with the coaching community in San Antonio and at the national level maintaining contact with NCAA coaches across the country that he has met through his coaching experiences.
Coach Plummer has been honored as an inductee into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame in Dallas in 2006. He was inducted into the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008.
Coach Plummer is married to the former Shirleta M. Jackson of Austin, Texas (daughter of Coach Lonnie Jackson). Coach Plummer and his wife are active member of Second Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas (Dr. Robert L. Jemerson, Sr., Pastor) where they serve in several capacities. He has a daughter Stephanie Plummer Rhodes (James Rhodes) a former Miss Huston-Tillotson; one grandson, Stefon James Rhodes and a granddaughter, Jaida Yvonne Rhodes.
