Texas College visited Huston-Tillotson for an early season, non conference match-up. Both teams have high expectations for the 2007 men's and women's seasons.
Women' s game (exhibition):
Texas College would start out as the aggressor, challenging the HT ladies' back line. However, the Lady Rams would prove to be pretty strong even with a couple of inexperienced players. A surge of early attacks from Texas College challenged HT's first year goalkeeper, Esela Guzman. Guzman responded with several breakaway saves and would end up with 12 saves on the afternoon. First year player Zaira Aguilar put HT into the early lead with a arching strike into the far corner, past the outstreched and diving Steers keeper. The 1st half ended 1-0.
The second half would see Texas College settle down and they began to exploit some inexperienced defenders. That would eventually result in three unanswered goals to end the contest at Texas College 3 Huston-Tillotson 1. The Lady Rams are back in action Sunday September the 2nd against cross town rival Concordia.
Men's game (non-conference):
Texas College would defend the regular season crown against the Conference Tournament Champions Huston-Tillotson in an early season non-conference match-up. The game started out a very fast pace and was an exciting game. However, as the heat index rose to well over 100 degrees, both teams would slow down dramatically. Texas College would strike first from a controversial offsides, giving the Rams an early wake up call. The game would stay 1-0 to conclude the first half.
After half time adjustments, sophomore sensation and 2007 captain Frank Toscano, leveled the match for the Rams at 1-1. The match picked up its action as Texas College commited a dangerous foul on Toscano leaving TC down a man as Reynol Fuentes would be given a straight red for his antics. However, Texas College would go on a scoring barage scoring two second half goals on lathargic defending by HT's defensemen. Fatigue played a huge role as the Rams defeated Mary Hardin Baylor the night before in an exhibition match. However, HT would not lay down as freshman Fernando Hernandez came off the bench for his second straight match to lift the Rams to a second and final goal that would leave the contest Texas College 3 Huston-Tillotson 2.
Huston-Tillotson Men's team are on the road next week against LeTourneau and nationally ranked Oklahoma Christian. Meet the Rams back at home Friday September the 7th at 6pm against Division III powerhouse Schreiner. Go Rams!
