Jackson, MS --- The Lady Rams volleyball team traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, to compete in the Millsaps Volleyball Invitational this past weekend working on finding the right combination of players to compete on the floor.
In the first match, the Lady Rams faced host Millsaps College Majors and came from behind to win the first set 30-28 and then stayed close in the next three sets 27-30, 26-30, and 21-30 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 42 minutes long. Junior outside hitter Shamell Spivey and senior Dominique Green led the attack with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Sophomore libero Stephanie Castro tied her school record high of 37 digs in a match and also had 3 aces. Freshman Tiffany Deba and senior Ashley Wright controlled the net with 6 and 3 blocks apiece.
Later that evening the Lady Rams played a tall Belhaven College team in a three set match dropping all three sets 19-30, 15-30, and 27-30. Deba and Spivey led the attack with 7 and 5 kills with Castro holding the back row with 26 digs.
Saturday, the Lady Rams play Loyola University from New Orleans in a match that went back and forth for one hour and forty-five minutes with Loyola winning in three sets 23-30, 16-30, and 28-30. Junior setter Adrienne Ringer had 33 assists to direct the Lady Rams attack with Spivey, sophomore TreeAndrea Grundy, and freshman Courtney Morris having 11, 8, and 6 kills apiece. Castro broke her record of digs in a match from yesterday with 40.
The last match of the tournament had the Lady Rams playing NCAA III East Texas Baptist University in a hard fought match with ETBU winning in three sets 15-30, 21-30, and 23-30.
Recap of the tournament --- The Lady Rams are now 0-9 for the season. Spivey finished the tournament with 35 kills from Ringer’s 115 assists. Castro had 120 digs and Amanda Paidle had 7 aces for the weekend.
Next Opponent: The Lady Rams travel to Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie for their first Red River Conference match on Tuesday, September 11, at 3:00 p.m.
