Austin, TX --- The Lady Rams volleyball team fought a close hard match in their first home match of the year at Mary E Branch Gymnasium losing to Schreiner University in five sets, 33-31, 23-30, 25-30,30-21, and 14-16.

 

The first set of the match would tell the tale about how the evening would go with the set going into extra points with the Lady Rams winning 33-31. Senior middle Ashley Wright set the pace with 4 kills in 5 swings for an .800 hitting ave and posted 2 solo blocks and assisted in 2 other blocks. Senior outside hitter Dominique Green added 5 kills while Junior setter Adrienne Ringer had 14 assists to direct the HT offense. Sophomore libero Stephanie Castro and freshman Yessenia Pena controlled the back row with 5 digs apiece.

 

Schreiner took sets 2 and 3, 23-30 and 25-30 and the Lady Rams came back to begin set 4 with a 15-4 lead and held off the Mountaineers for a 30-21 to force a fifth and deciding set for the match.

 

The fifth set was a seesaw set with the score staying pretty even throughout the set. With the Lady Rams hold a 14-13 lead and serving for match point, started a rally which lasted for about 2 minutes with a swing by sophomore TreeAndrea Grundy just missed the end to allow the Mountaineers to tie the set. The next two rallies when in favor of Schreiner to win the match 14-16.

 

Recap of the Match --- The Lady Rams are now 0-5 for the season. Wright led the Lady Rams with 12 kills for a .688 hitting ave and Green and freshman middle Tiffany Deba had 9 and 8 kills respectively. Ringer finished the match with 38 assists and 5 aces with Castro and Pena each with 5 and 4 aces respectively. Wright controlled the net with 6 solo and 4 assist blocks and Castro and Pena controlled the back row with 23 and 16 digs.

 

Next Opponent: The Lady Rams leave for Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, to play in their Invitational Volleyball tournament. They will be competing against NAIA schools of Belhaven University, Loyola University and NCAA III schools Millsaps College and East Texas Baptist University.
